HP StorageWorks Adds High-Performance File System

Plus advanced authentication technology from Likewise

A high-performance, commercially-supported Windows-compatible file server, and advanced authentication are now available with some of the HP StorageWorks platforms.

Likewise-CIFS provides the integrated SMB/CIFS solution for Windows client support and Likewise Identity Service provides authentication of non-Windows systems to Active Directory-making it easy to authenticate users, control access to applications and data, and improve security.

"Clients with demanding workloads need to rapidly execute file transfers, while ensuring only authorized access to data," said Lee Johns, director, marketing, Unified Storage Division, HP. "The performance and scalability of the HP StorageWorks offerings coupled with Likewise's technology gives clients storage solutions that can grow with their business and provide multiprotocol access to data."

Likewise-CIFS is a highly scalable SMB/CIFS platform for Linux and Unix operating systems. The Likewise-CIFS stack allows Windows clients to seamlessly access folders and files on Linux, Unix, and Mac computers. Features of Likewise-CIFS include a modern, OEM-friendly architecture, a high-performance, scalable design and full support for both the SMB1 and SMB2 protocols.

"HP customers include many of the largest and most demanding organizations in the world," said Barry Crist, CEO of Likewise.  "Likewise solutions bring a new level of reliability and performance to the storage industry for cross-platform authentication and file sharing.

The Likewise technologies are also used by VMware, Citrix, DataDomain/EMC and Isilon.

What lies ahead for the SMB/CIFS file server component of the Likewise Open project?  I asked Likewise software engineer, Jerry Carter, who talked about adding Distributed File System (DFS) support and said, "Look for more as we continue building on the Likewise Open platform base."
